Mothers symbolize the beginning of life, its most sensitive stage, and that requires greater care. Both pregnancy and the birth of a baby are processes of joy and hope, but also of great responsibility. If you are pregnant, taking care of your health and that of your future baby should be your top priority.

If you have health insurance from the health market, keep in mind that all plans cover pregnancy and childbirth, even if the pregnancy began before your coverage began.

Maternity and newborn care, including services received before and after delivery, are included in the essential health benefits of your insurance. In addition to emergency, hospitalization, mental health, rehabilitation, preventive care and chronic diseases, laboratories, outpatient services, medications, pediatrics; maternity and neonatal services are also included in your health plan.

Most insurance companies have special programs designed for the care and monitoring of pregnancy.

What programs do insurers offer?

For example, if you’re a Florida Blue member, the Prenatal Healthy Addition is the insurer’s program geared toward mom-to-be’s care for a healthy pregnancy. This program seeks to promote the best health practices during this period, such as the detection and monitoring of pregnancy risks, education on healthy lifestyles, proper nutrition and hydration, prenatal education and information, and emotional support.

When you join the program, you get quick access to a registered nurse, healthy lifestyle counseling, free educational materials, among other necessary services and great information.

If you have health insurance from Cigna, you can count on the Healthy Pregnancies, Healthy Babies program to help you and your baby through the pregnancy process. This program provides you with direct assistance 24 hours a day, all throughout the week, a helpline with a health advisor, access to a library of maternity audio files, and general health topics.

By logging into your online member session you will have tools to view the weekly progress of your pregnancy and prepare for delivery.

Start Smart For Your Baby is Ambetter ‘s program for its pregnant members. Through this, a nurse adviser assists you 24 hours a day by phone. You, as an expectant mother, will have support and resources for breastfeeding, assistance if you experience prenatal depression, and methods to help you stop smoking or drinking. In addition, over-the-counter (OTC) medications may be available at no cost to you.

Likewise, Oscar provides its pregnant members with a complete guide to pregnancy stages, prenatal evaluations, medications, etc., in addition to post-partum services.

In addition to maintaining medical rigor for a healthy pregnancy and delivery, remember that medical coverage is important at any time in your life. For this reason, keep in mind the following regulations that you should not ignore in order to maintain your health plan, even after giving birth.

Requirements to keep your insurance after pregnancy

If you keep your insurance through the health marketplace, remember to update your application to add the baby to your coverage. Your baby may also qualify for Medicaid or Chip Care.

If you are found eligible for Medicaid during your pregnancy, you will be covered for up to 60 days after giving birth. Later you may no longer qualify, but this would make you eligible for special enrollment in a health marketplace plan.

If you have Medicaid when you give birth, your newborn will automatically be enrolled in Medicaid coverage and will remain eligible for at least one year.

If you recently gave birth and don’t have health coverage, your baby’s birth qualifies him/her for special enrollment.

Your immigration status may prevent you from qualifying for health insurance or some type of state assistance for the care of your pregnancy.

Fortunately, Discount Plans are accessible to people without immigration status. These plans have special packages for pregnant women with which you can have the required medical care before and during childbirth, at reduced costs.
